121 starters fronted up for Summer Series 4 on the Forty Baskets map in perfect weather.

Richard Mountstephens was the highest scorer of the day with 480 points, picking up all the 30 pointers but getting back a few minutes late. Veteran Michael Burton was close behind with 470 points. The women’s competition was also close with Kristen Noble on 310 points edging out Christine Curtin on 300.

There were quite a few newcomers and first timers, Phillip Harding with 280 points in the open section and Caroline Yarnell with 220 in women vets showed a lot of promise. Also among the first-timers were 5 year Rory Gray with his dad Peter and the Grimmond family led by 9 year old Jenni, both family groups seemed to enjoy their runs.

The early starters found all controls in place, but number 23 near the Manly Oceanworld disappeared soon after 5.30 and 28 was stolen sometime after 6.30. All runners reaching these controls were credited with the points, the Murphy girls, Catherine and Clare, were credited with an extra 30 points each after the event as they were the first to find 23 missing, all the previous runners found the control.

The course was designed so that neither those going towards Manly first nor those going towards Reef Beach first would get an advantage. However most took the Manly option with 51 runners reaching the furthest control 23, the one that disappeared, while only 17 runners reached control 11, the most scenic point on the course, the furthest control in the other direction.

The most visited site was number 1 with 84 starters scoring there, the next control to the east along the Spit to Manly Walk, number 18, had 71 hits, while the following one, number 7, an easier control had 77 hits. That suggests that 6 people couldn’t find number 18 as you had to go past 18 to reach 7.
